Nancy O'Dell began her broadcast career as an anchor and reporter for WPDE-TV located in Myrtle Beach South Carolina. Later, she worked at WCBD as an anchor in the morning and a crime reporter. The articles written by O'Dell in Charleston on how Charleston police handled DUI cases with care, caused an investigation by State Law Enforcement Division. This investigation led to a more strict directive for state authorities. Ms. O'Dell received the Best Report of the Media Award South Carolina by the Associated Press.
